If you have to ‘punish’ students, then don’t keep them in so that you have to supervise them. Give them useful work to do in their time so that you can have your breaks as a time to rest and relax. This punishment might be to report to the teacher on playground duty to pick up litter. Alternatively, they might report to you when you are on playground duty. You could remove privileges, have them on a behaviour card or on a behaviour contract.

The worst kind of traffic to get is the kind you must pay for who has no interest in your offer but ended up at your site under false pretenses. You must be careful in your selection process. That means you must qualify the prospect before letting him into your gates. He of she should be encouraged to look further only if they met certain conditions. So, I’ve been on a journey of learning to listen to myself at a deeper level. And, I invite you to join me on this journey, too. I want to share four of the ways I’ve been deepening my ability to listen to my self. And, conveniently, they spell S.E.L.F…
From the very beginning set the standards for behaviour high. ‘Jump’ on early problems immediately. (One of the guiding principles of a successful principal I worked with was this: If you are particular to make sure all the simple issues of discipline are concentrated on, e.g. good manners, being on time, correct dress and so on, the students are so concerned about being ‘caught’ that the more serious offences never seem to develop. It is important to note here that it is much easier to ‘loosen up’ on discipline later than to tighten up at a later date.
I moved back to my home state of Mississippi to take care of an ailing mom. As a writer, I knew this could put me in a vulnerable situation, but I also knew that my mom took care of me whenever I was ill and that was the right thing to do. And as I expected, writer’s block set in and I did not write for four years. That was okay. One learns some valuable lessons (much more important than writing) when caring for an ill parent. She was once an English teacher, in love with the English language, and, as goofy as it might seem, sometimes I feel her soul is guiding my own text. I have heard more than one writer or artist share the same sentiment; didn’t believe them at the time, now I do.
Our former employer had fired Bill because he was ‘too slow and indecisive’. How was it that a man who’d had two exemplary careers as a fire-jumper and military analyst and had enjoyed a long and successful career at other institutions come to us only to disappoint? Amazingly, his bosses did not ask this question. They found it easier to blame him and his former employers for duplicity. He was gone within months.
